Văcărești Delta

The area was initially meant to be an artificial lake, a water reserve for Bucharest, but due to the high permeability of the soil, the water kept infiltrating in the ground, unable to reach a suitable level.

Therefore, 30 years later, following a natural course, a natural habitat was formed, where wild fauna & flora exists today despite the urban surroundings. High mounds and concrete dams designed to hold the lake under control acted as a barrier between the urban city and the natural habitat, allowing wildlife to develop undisturbed.

Văcărești Delta is a subject under heavy debate, the question being whether or not an anthropic intervention might create an unbalance in this self-preserved ecosystem.

As a tutor, we recommend you to do a research /a SWOT analysis prior to building your projects. The organizing team will discuss with you about your conclusions and decide together the scale of the intervention and the exact intervention site and its impact on the surroundings.
